The Discovery of the Nucleus

چکیده
By ‘unobservable’ Godfrey-Smith means ‘not directly accessible to our senses.’ In such cases, philosophers of science distinguish the observable from the detectable. In science we work with models, conceptual representations of real things and processes.[2] When the object of study is not directly accessible to our senses, we also have to make a distinction between what is observable and what is detectable. An object or process is detectable, Godfrey-Smith continues, “if either it is observable or its presence can be very reliably inferred from what is observable.”[3] In this sense, nuclei are detectable. If you are not convinced, then medical radiology, nuclear power stations, and nuclear weapons make the point that something at the heart of matter exists that we call the nucleus, whose realities have been at least partially captured by our models. This article is a short account of how models of the atom and its nucleus were developed.

Evolution of viruses and cells: do we need a fourth domain of life to explain the origin of eukaryotes?
The recent discovery of diverse very large viruses, such as the mimivirus, has fostered a profusion of hypotheses positing that these viruses define a new domain of life together with the three cellular ones (Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya). It has also been speculated that they have played a key role in the origin of eukaryotes as donors of important genes or even as the structures at the origi...
متن کاملRelationship of Dopamine of the Nucleus Accumbens with Intra-infralimbic Apomorphine Microinjection
Objective(s): The dopamine level of the nucleus accumbens changes during some stereotyped behaviors. To study dopamine level of the nucleus accumbens in intra infralimbic apomorphine-induced climbing, microdialysis probes were implanted into the nucleus accumbens shell of male Sprague Dawley rats weighting 275–400 g. Materials and Methods: The rats were divided into two groups (apomorphine ...
متن کاملInsulin Within the Arcuate Nucleus Has Paradoxical Effects on Nociception in Healthy and Diabetic Rats
Broad nervous circuits originate from the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus project to many parts of the brain which are related to pain perception. Insulin receptors have been found in the arcuate nucleus. Since nociception may be affected in type 1 diabetes, the present study aimed to investigate the intra-arcuate nucleus insulin role in pain perception in STZ-induced diabetic and healthy rats. Fo...
متن کاملDrug Discovery Acceleration Using Digital Microfluidic Biochip Architecture and Computer-aided-design Flow
A Digital Microfluidic Biochip (DMFB) offers a promising platform for medical diagnostics, DNA sequencing, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and drug discovery and development. Conventional Drug discovery procedures require timely and costly manned experiments with a high degree of human errors with no guarantee of success. On the other hand, DMFB can be a great solution for miniaturization, int...
متن کاملDesigning an Ontology for Knowledge Discovery in Iran’s Vaccine
Ontology is a requirement engineering product and the key to knowledge discovery. It includes the terminology to describe a set of facts, assumptions, and relations with which the detailed meanings of vocabularies among communities can be determined. This is a qualitative content analysis research. This study has made use of ontology for the first time to discover the knowledge of vaccine in Ir...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effect of orexin-1 receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell on cost-benefit decision making in male rats
Background: Cost-benefit decision-making is a one of the decision-making models in which the animal achieves a final benefit (reward) by evaluating the cost (effort or delay). The role of different brain regions such as nucleus accumbens in this process has been proven. Orexin is a neuropeptide expressed exclusively by lateral hypothalamus area neurons and orexin-producing neurons project their...
